Prevention That Keeps Your Pet Protected

Vaccinations play a vital role in your pet’s long-term health and in protecting the greater Orange City community. They help prevent dangerous diseases — such as rabies, distemper, and parvovirus — that can cause serious illness or even death in unvaccinated animals. At Volusia Woods Animal Clinic, our veterinarians follow vaccine protocols to provide care that is safe, effective, and tailored to each individual pet.

Vaccines not only protect your pet, but also reduce the spread of contagious illnesses in our area. By keeping your pet’s vaccines up to date, you’re helping protect other pets and people across Orange City, DeBary, and Deltona from preventable diseases.

When Should My Pet Receive Vaccinations?

Puppies and kittens typically start their vaccines around 6–8 weeks old, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age. These early vaccinations help their immune systems develop the antibodies they need to stay healthy.

Adult pets require regular boosters to maintain immunity. Depending on the vaccine, these may be given annually or every three years. During your pet’s wellness visit, we’ll create a vaccination schedule based on their age, breed, travel habits, and environment to ensure they get just what they need — no more, no less.

What Vaccines Does My Pet Need?

We offer a complete range of vaccines for both dogs and cats:

  • Dog vaccines: Rabies, distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, and canine influenza.
  • Cat vaccines: Rabies, panleukopenia (feline distemper), calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and feline leukemia (FeLV).

Our veterinarians will explain which vaccines are considered core (recommended for all pets) and which are lifestyle-based, depending on your pet’s daily routine.

Are Vaccines Safe for Pets?

Yes. Modern vaccines are very safe, and side effects are uncommon. Some pets may experience mild sleepiness or tenderness at the injection site for a day or two, but serious reactions are extremely rare. The benefits — protecting your pet from life-threatening disease — far outweigh the risks.
