Derek Simonds
Practice Manager
Growing up in DeLand, my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian took root early on. Animal care has always been a significant part of my life, a passion that led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Central Florida.
I dove into the veterinary field at the earliest opportunity, starting in an entry-level position and working my way through every aspect of the profession. This hands-on experience has given me a comprehensive understanding and deep expertise. I am excited to continue client, patient, and community care as the practice manager at Volusia Woods Animal Clinic!
Outside of work, you’ll often find me on the water, enjoying fishing, or in the garage, tinkering with my project car. At home, my two rescue cats, River and Jack Jack, keep things interesting!

Jamie L.
Veterinary Technician
My dream of becoming a veterinarian began when I was four years old, the moment my parents brought home a dachshund puppy in a strawberry basket. That passion led me to work in a veterinary clinic at age 16, and I never looked back. I went on to study animal sciences at the University of Illinois, where I also earned my DVM.
My husband and I raised our two boys in Naperville, Illinois. Now that they’re grown, we’ve started our empty-nest life in sunny New Smyrna Beach. Our family includes Sammy, a 12-year-old Morkie who loves to nap on the back of the couch, and Izzy, a two-year-old Kentucky Street poodle mix who’s a fantastic dancer and can walk on her hind legs.
When I’m not with my four-legged patients, you can find me enjoying my favorite hobbies. I’m an avid indoor and outdoor gardener and love to spend time on the water kayaking and fishing. I also enjoy reading historical fiction, crocheting, crafting, and cooking for my family and friends. I even started playing the piano as an adult.
